As our youngest son was walking out the front door this morning to go to school, he hesitated and looked back to see where our dog, Misty was standing. As if J.D. was halfway out the door when he remembered he should have checked for the dog first and wanted to correct his mistake. Of course Misty was watching for her chance and J.D.’s hesitation gave it to her. She took out the door like a shot into drizzling, freezing weather. I made sure J.D. was bundled up and sent him on his way – hoping Misty would not follow him to school.
When Misty has gotten out the door lately, she has not left the street – or at the farthest one street over. She used to go farther than that, but that was when the boys went after her on bicycles. Of course, Misty thought it was a game and kept running in the other direction. So we quit chasing her when she gets out.
I sure did not intend to chase her in rainy cold weather. Besides, most of the time I could see her somewhere on the block out one of our front windows. I left the side gate open so she could get into the backyard. Several times she came within six feet of the front door or the gate. I opened the front door, called to her, and she was off again.
I was working at my desk a little later in the morning when Misty appeared at the side window to my left. I opened the back door, let her in, and dried her off. Having known what was to come, I already had a large towel ready. Once I had her somewhat dried – at least enough to protect the carpet – I went out the back door to shut the gate. To my surprise the gate was already closed shut. I looked through the slats at the top to see if anyone was still around, but I saw no one. I thanked whoever it was out loud – in case they were still within earshot.
Most likely it was one of our neighbors who had brought Misty home and put her in the yard. I may never know, but I appreciate the good Samaritan that came into my life today. It is nice to know in a day of people talking on their cell phone and/or not paying attention that people can still be kind, thoughtful, and helpful. I will make it a point to “pass it on” the next time I have a chance to help someone out. And pray for my good Samaritan.
Peace be with you.
